Kurosawa traspone, come fece anni prima Renoir, un omonimo dramma di Maksim Gor'kij. Il film si svolge quasi tutto all'interno del dormitorio, dando alla pellicola una forma statica e teatrale. Gli attori sono tutti ottimi caratteristi, sebbene il film, per la staticità di cui sopra e la lentezza e la verbosità delle sequenze alla lunga risulta un pò pesante. Kurosawa si conferma comunque ancora una volta un ottimo narratore di storie e di vicende esistenziali.
